It seems like it has been forever since I last posted. While I'm always happy to be right in my predictions, I'm not very thrilled that I've gone from writing something semi-weekly to monthly. But regardless....
I'm nearly done with my first quarter at Santa Clara. Sometimes it can be a little much having a full-time (+) job and trying to be a part-time student. But in the end, I think it's totally worth it.
On the home front, I have finally gotten around to futzing around with the servers Dan and I brought home from his work. I also had my mom ship out her old desktop after she switched over to a mac. So now I've got an expensive array of toys that I intend to dismantle and reassemble into a machine that I really have no good use for. Once everything is up and running, I'll have over 1TB of storage and enough processing power that a horse would be jealous - I think I'll fill the whole thing up with porn. I'm kidding. But seriously.
In other news, Condi stopped by Google the other day. Her voice seemed much squeakier in person. She and the Secretary of State of the UK were cruising the valley to check in on innovation. After a little intro, she gave us the typical Iraq speech (comparing it to Seward's Folly - which was interesting) and how she has a bunch of Democratic friends (Pelosi being one of them).
We have a tradition at Google - allowing any Googler to ask our guests questions when the come to speak. There is a microphone set up in the audience and people just line up and ask questions. Since Condi is part of a pretty controversial administration, some of the questions got kinda heated.
[Paraphrased question]There was another point in the conversation when Condi assured us that she knows a lot of people in the world and that all of them truly like Americans, just not the American government. That's rich.
Googler: Do you think the United States is breaking international laws and agreements (Geneva convention, etc.)?
Condi: [Canned response about how important international laws are - but no direct answer.]
Googler: But you didn't answer my quest-
Condi: Yes I, I think I did.
Googler: No, you didn't.
Condi: Yes, I answered your question.
Moderator: Next quesiton.
