Purple Cow - Seth Godin

In this very short read Godin makes one overarching point; if you really want to be successful in business and in life, don't just do the norm. Break-out and be remarkable.

He supports this with countless stories of yesterday's and today's business leaders and how they transformed their business and their life by doing what was remarkable - by being, in the eyes of the consumer, a purple cow - something totally unique that you will never forget.

His stories range from the legendary Stew Leonard's to a Ben and Jerry's outlet in Bronxville. Not only does the variety of stories keep the book easy to read and fast paced, it strengthens Godin's argument with a myriad of examples.

Coach - Michael Lewis

When I first picked this book up, I had no idea it was written by the author from Moneyball. This very short read (under 100 pages) is about a baseball coach that Lewis had in his youth. This coach pushed him to attain the attributes that would make him a better person; self-respect, sacrifice, courage, and endurance.

While the story read more like Lewis wanted to thank this coach for everything he did, the character of the coach was all too familiar for me as he reminded me of one of my high school football coaches. So I took the little that Lewis had to say to heart.
